Living in Greve our neighbors had an apple tree that was full of apples the fall. Apples can not grow here where it is so hot, but we have pears. The pear trees in our yard are old and sad and we have not had a healthy crop of pears in years. They still bloom in the spring and the flowers are pretty, but we haven't had any pears survive long enough to grow. Back when they did grow I would pick a bunch and make pear crisp to bring to my Grandpa and GrannyLitteral as they did not have pear trees. Luckily someone gave my dad a bunch of pears so Loryn helped her grandma make a pear dump cake. This one is easy. Not the same as my old recipe, which I think used oatmeal in the topping, but good anyway.
Mom mom precooked the pears in the rice cooker by adding a little liquid and steaming them. Place the sliced cooked pears in the cake pan and add brown sugar and cinammon and then sprinkle a yellow cake mix over the top, pour melted butter on top. Bake.

pears in the rice cooker?!?! I have never heard of this! But every Cajun home has a rice cooker, so the more uses, the better! :o)
