I Married a Dane
Ten years ago I traveled across the sea and I married a Dane. We lived in Greve, and my Danish Prince worked for Philips Consumer Electronics in Copenhagen. But unlike most of you, we chose to permanently settle in my country, the US, instead of Denmark. There were many reasons, the most important one being that I had a 3 year old daughter with a severe language delay, and we felt that learning English was most important at that time, and living in Denmark was not where we needed to be during her early years. But time has gone on and the 3 year old is now a teenager. Recently our minds have been returning to reestablishing a residence in Denmark, one of the reasons being our daughter’s need to learn the language so that she can retain her dual citizenship.
When I moved to Denmark, It was a love/hate relationship. I felt isolated as I was at home alone with a special needs toddler. (She has since been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, a high functioning form of autism.) I had sought out LINK and the American Women’s groups and tried to attend functions, like the Mom and Me playgroups, but she was older and bigger than most of the babies and well… autistic toddlers are quite a handful. I didn’t speak Danish and it just seemed like we needed to be in America. So now, ten years later, we have started to talk about returning to my dear husband’s homeland, so that the daughter had the connection with her adopted homeland as well.
I hope to meet and gain support from other expats so that our move, when ever it may be, is easier than last time!

One more week of work before my summer holiday. As you might have seen,
I’ve been taking a break from my blog. I’ll be away for a while yet…

Talk about being among the lucky few :-) (marrying a Dane that is).
Growing up in one country and then moving to another can be difficult. Regardless of where it is. Mostly because it's not where you grew up and it's not what you are used to.
I thought the dual citizenship was going away between DK and US but I guess I just learned something ;-)
hope things are well down south and you get the go-cart going soon. Looks like it will be tons of fun :-)
I think we all need the blog of how you met the Danish prince?!! ;o)
Looking forward to hearing about your journey to get back to DK!
