Loryn's 4-H Poultry Project

Loryn is going to raise Chickens for 4-H and we just started at Easter. She got 1week old birds at easter...2 chicks and 2 ducklings. The cats stole one of the chicks when they were 3 weeks old. So she has a Bantam White faced Black Spanish ( Blackie)and 2 Mascovy ducks, (Meadow and Jose')....The DUCKS ARE HUGE not even about 6 weeks old. 2 weeks ago I bought 6 week old mixed sex Americana chicks( they lay blue and green eggs) and two Self blue/ lavender Dutch bantams. Bantams are just miniature breeds of chickens that lay little eggs.. Then we bought 2 female Rhode Island Reds, which are rust colored and 2 female Barred Rock and 2 female silverlaced Wyandotte- those are both heavy black and white breeds that lay lots of large brown eggs .We also bought a pair of feathered leg bantams...I was not sure what they are but think one is a black slikie and the other a black cochin. Benny and I built an incubator out of a styrofoam ice chest and a dimmer bulb...I put in 17 eggs 20 days ago and have been turning them 3 times and day and today they started hatching!!!!I could hear peeping coming from the eggs yesterday. I have 2 americana and 4 silkies in a brooder and 4 more hatching in the bator. I hope the other 6 will hatch. I had to take out one that was no good. I'll post a picture later on! They are so cute chirping in my living room.
