After a lazy breakfast Harry offered to to take us on the town. First stop was a ride on the Metro, a new computer automated trainline which opened in 2002, just to have a look. Loryn had fun pretenting to be the driver. The metro passes the Bella Center, A large convention center for Copenhagen, and Field's, the largest shopping center in Scandinavia which is very new.
We a took a break at Magasin and looked a round a little at the food mart and bakery, we didn't buy any thing since the food there is the same except for the increase in the price for the name, Magasin. From there walked to Nyhavn and grabbed a hotdog from a Steff Houlberg brand sausage stand (photo-behind the large anchor) . Benny and Loryn had the French hotdog and I had one with fried onions and pickles named the Dansk.
Our walk next took us to Amalienborg Slot, the Danish Queen's Palace during the winter. We arrived just in time to see the chaning of the guard. It was a simple ceremony since the Queen is not living there during the Summer. We had seen the full ceremonial changing of the guard when we were here in the Winter of 1999. It is just a short walk to the Marble Church, or The Frederiks Church . We decided to walk the stairs to the viewing tower. The first 61 steps were easy and gave a great , but dizzing view of the inside of the church including the Queen's royal box (the Queen attends services here) I must admit it took me a while to get the top as the 71 step spiral staircase was quite steep and narrow and it was very hot. I became claustraphobic and stopped to allow the rest of the tour to go first and followed at my own pace. This link discribes the tour perfectly, had I read it before hand I might have stayed down on the ground floor with Benny's mom. Loryn had no problem with the tight space, having gone ahead with BedsteFar Harry.
We continued on to Strøget, the pedestrian street for some window shopping. We stopped off for a Famous Danish Ice Cream walking sundae. We made it to the City Hall Square, Rådhuspladsen. Benny picked up a bag of fresh Danish Ærter (Peas) and shelled and ate them raw. He made me taste them ( I hate peas) and raw, they were no better than any other pea I've tasted, but he was in heaven.
Ready for dinner we began walking to a Turkish resturant, Harry and Mor knew. On the way we past the entrance to Tivoli. The beautiful garden and amusement park that inspired Walt Disney to build his own wonderland. Just next to the gate is a Build-a-Bear Store. It was huge! Loryn wanted a Hello Kitty but I told her she should wait until we got home. What she should choose when we came back with Lilly Bunny was a Danish outift we could not buy in the states. Like a Danish Flag T- shirt or a Mermaid for the HC Andersen series. We promised to come back latter. We walked and walked until Mor gave up finding the resturant they had planned to take us to. So we stopped at an Indian buffet, Koh-I-Noor Restaurant, After dinner we noticed the Turkish place was right next door!.
